Spark! is a high-energy drumming show built for big crowds, dark streets, festival stages and moments people remember.
It's loud, physical, visual and properly alive: rhythm, movement, light, travel, long days, brilliant people and the kind of gigs most performers never get near. And right now, we're looking for new performers to join us in 2026.
It might be you.
This doesn't come around often. We recruit new performers roughly once every three years. For the right person, Spark! can become a huge part of your creative life: paid performance work, travel, training, brilliant gigs, and a team of people who genuinely look after each other. So if this has caught your attention, don't sit on it. Go for it.

The job
What it's actually like
Ask our performers and a lot of them will tell you the same thing: it's the best job they've ever had. Not because it's easy (it isn't), but because there's nothing else quite like walking out into the dark, lighting up, and feeling a few thousand people light up too. Audiences travel miles for this show, and come back year after year.
You'll travel. You'll play to massive crowds. You'll spend 4am in an airport with people who become some of your closest mates. It's loud, it's physical, it's a bit mad, and it's a long way from a desk.
If that lights something up in you, read on.
"The Rome gig was up there as one of the best adventures of all time. Not only are you helping us keep roofs over our heads, you are helping to fill our memory banks with such wonderful things."

Requirements
To join us, you will:
Have excellent rhythmic skills.
You'll probably be a drummer or percussionist, but you might be a dancer with great rhythm, a beatboxer or a precision juggler. We're open-minded, but some rhythmic skill is essential.
Be a comfortable mover.
There's a lot of choreography in the show, and you need to move well.
Be energetic and hard-working.
This is a physically intense show, with lots of movement, big drums and full-on energy.
Be based in north east England.
Within one hour's travel of North Shields for rehearsals.
Be up for adventure and flexible with your availability.
We've got shows booked through 2026 and beyond, with more landing all the time.
Enjoy travel and meeting people.
We've performed in over 40 countries and every corner of the UK. You'll see some amazing places, eat wild and wonderful food, and yes, spend the odd 4am in an airport.
Be professional and reliable.
Your word is your bond.
Be a team player.
We spend a lot of time together: rehearsing, performing, travelling, sharing vans, hotels, airports, food, tiredness and stupid jokes. The right attitude matters as much as raw talent.
The qualities above matter to us as much as experience. Whatever your background, put yourself forward. We all got our start because someone gave us a first break. This could be yours.

The travel
Where this job can take you
It's been quite a year. Last year we opened the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury. This summer we warmed up the crowd at Radio 1's Big Weekend for Olivia Dean and Zara Larsson. We started 2026 in Taiwan, and we'll be finishing it somewhere we've never set foot before: the Seychelles.
Over the years we've drummed at the Qatar World Cup, in the Maldives, and across more than 40 countries. But honestly? Some of the best days out are the little places you'd never otherwise set foot in: a tiny festival in the middle of nowhere, a market town square that goes completely off. And wherever it is, you do it alongside some of the loveliest people you'll ever meet. That's the bit that keeps people coming back, year after year.

Fran, who was part of Spark! for the best part of a decade, kept a beautifully-written blog called Long Haul Lumière about life on the road with us. She's since moved on, but the blog is still up, and it captures the magic of this strange, wonderful job better than we ever could. If you read one thing, read her entry on Cuba. Go on, have a proper look at where this could take you.
The money
So how much can you earn?
Let's talk money, because it's a real job, not a hobby.
Performance fees average £225 per day. Our top earner last year made around £21,000 with Spark!, off the back of roughly 90 days' work across the year.
The work is seasonal: autumn and winter are full-on, show after show, while things wind right down over spring and summer, when most of our performers throw themselves into their own projects. How much you earn comes down to:
- How available you are. The most flexible performers do the most shows.
- How many performers a show needs. Most bookings need between 5 and 10 of us.
- Your skills and willingness to learn. Get to grips with more than one part in the show and more shows come your way.
For your first year with us, we'd expect somewhere between £12,000 and £16,000 to be a realistic guide, though it genuinely depends on the individual.
On top of your fees, you'll get most of your meals (some belters) or per diems when we're away. Blend Spark! with other work or projects, like nearly all our performers do, and it can be genuinely rewarding, in every sense.
Initial rehearsals
New performers go through 12–15 days of rehearsals, spread across late July to mid-September. We try to fit them around your existing commitments, usually 2–3 days a week.
You'll need at least 20 free weekdays (or work you can rearrange) between mid-July and mid-September so we have room to schedule you in. (If you're away the whole of August, for example, this probably won't work this time.)
Initial rehearsals are paid at £135 per day (£675 a week), paid in two parts: 50% at the end of each week, and the final 50% once you've done your first eight show days with us.
First day of new performer rehearsals (nervous?) to after-show celebrations with the full Spark! team and dance legends Orbital, less than six weeks later.

Make sure you can make the audition day
Our audition day is in North Shields on Thursday 2nd July 2026, 9am to 4.30pm.
You have to be free that day. If you're not, we can't consider you this time round, simple as that.
If we invite you, you'll spend the day with some of the current Spark! team. You'll learn two pieces of music and the choreography that goes with them, have a go performing in the dark with the drums lit up (it's a moment), and we'll get to know you. We'll tell you more about the show, money included. And honestly? It's a brilliant day. That's what nearly everyone says on their way out, whatever the outcome.
-
Make your one-minute stepping & clapping video
Learn the simple stepping-and-clapping pattern in our short how-to video, then prop up your phone (or rope in a mate) and film yourself doing the full pattern four times. It'll come out around a minute long.
Give it everything, first impressions count. Watch how sharp the turns are in the how-to video; chin up, face switched on, head controlled and not rolling about. Note the tempo. Loads of the videos we get have people staring at their shoes, drifting off halfway through, or clapping the wrong pattern entirely, and they don't get an audition. Don't be that person.
It's meant to be quick and rough, but we need to see you head to feet, clapping the rhythm and stepping in time. Find a bit of space, present yourself like you mean it, and say "hi" at the start.
Stick it on YouTube (easiest for us, just mark it "unlisted" so only we can see it) and drop the link in your application. Vimeo, Dropbox or a Drive link is fine too if you'd rather.
The stepping & clapping how-to video. Watch it through, then film your own. You can also download the video (1080p, 121MB, so maybe wait for wifi) to keep on your phone.
-
Tell us a bit about yourself
The clapping video above is what really counts. This part just helps us get a feel for the person we might be sharing a van (and a stage, and the odd 4am airport) with. Do it your way: film a casual 2–5 minute video talking to camera, or, if you'd rather, write it down.
Make sure you cover:
- What you play or do, and how long you've been at it
- Your performance experience and proudest moment so far
- Your availability over the summer and how Spark! would fit around your other work
- Any other skills or talents you'd bring
- And, in a nutshell, why you?
No script, no polish needed, we just want to meet the real you. And please, write it yourself, in your own words. Keep it human: we take real and rough over slick and fake every time.
Videos sorted? The application form takes your contact details and your video links.
Apply nowApplications close at 5pm on Monday 29th June 2026. We read them as they land, so the sooner yours is in the better, and we may be able to tell you you're through before the deadline. We'll let everyone know either way by 10pm on Monday 29th June.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
A few things people often want to know before applying.
About you and your skills
Do I need to be a drummer?
No, but you do need strong rhythm. Most Spark! performers have a background in drumming, percussion, dance, movement, circus or another physical performance skill. If you can keep time, learn patterns, move well and perform with energy, we want to hear from you.
Do I need to read music?
No. Spark! material is taught practically, so you don't need to read music. You do need strong rhythm, good listening, concentration and the ability to learn patterns accurately.
Do I need professional experience?
No. Professional experience is useful, but it isn't the main thing. We're looking for rhythm, movement, stage presence, stamina, reliability, flexibility and a good team attitude.
How physical is the show?
Very. Spark! is a physical performance role. You'll be drumming, moving, learning choreography, performing in costume, working outdoors, travelling and carrying equipment, all while keeping your performance level up for the crowd. You don't need to arrive as the finished article, but you do need to be fit, coordinated and ready to work hard.
Where you're based and your availability
Do I need to live in the North East?
Yes. You need to be based in the North East, within about an hour of North Shields. Rehearsals take place here, the team is based here, and new performers need to be available regularly through the rehearsal period. This isn't the kind of work we'd want anyone relocating for, so if you're not already based in the region (or already planning to be), this probably isn't the right time.
Can students apply?
Spark! is unlikely to work alongside a full-time course with fixed weekday commitments, especially during the initial rehearsal period, which happens on weekdays in North Shields. It can work well alongside part-time study, freelance work or flexible creative projects. It can also be a brilliant next step after finishing a course. Lots of our performers joined just after graduating or finishing training, when they were building a freelance life and looking for paid performance work, travel, experience and a team to be part of.
What kind of availability do I need?
You need to be flexible, especially while you're new and learning the show. Initial rehearsals happen on weekdays. Shows can land on weekdays, evenings, weekends and sometimes in short runs away from home. You don't have to say yes to every date, and we have a larger team than we need for most shows, which gives everyone some flexibility. That said, the performers who get the most work are usually the ones who can say yes most often, learn more than one part, and make Spark! fit around their other projects. If you've got a fixed job or course that makes you unavailable on the same key days every week, this probably won't work.
Do I need to drive?
No, but you do need to be able to get to rehearsals in North Shields reliably and on time. For shows away from home, performers usually travel together in company vehicles from an agreed meeting point, which can vary depending on the team and the job. We don't usually pick people up from home, so you'll need to be able to get yourself to the meeting point.
The work and the money
Is this full-time work?
No. Spark! is paid freelance performance work, and the amount of work varies through the year. For some performers it becomes the main part of their income. For others it sits alongside teaching, bands, dance work or other flexible jobs. The performers who do the most with us are usually the ones with strong availability, good skills and a willingness to learn more than one part in the show.
How much would I earn in my first year?
It genuinely depends on you. As a realistic guide, we'd expect a new performer to earn somewhere between £12,000 and £16,000 in their first year, with the top end going to people with strong availability who learn more than one part of the show. Performance fees average £225 per day, and initial rehearsals are paid too.
Is this freelance / self-employed work?
Spark! performers are booked on a freelance basis. We'll explain how bookings, fees and availability work in more detail if you're invited to audition.
Who sorts travel and accommodation?
For shows away from home, we arrange and cover travel and accommodation, and you'll usually get meals or per diems while you're away too.
The audition day
What's the audition day like?
Hard work, but genuinely good fun. It's a full, hands-on day with some of the current Spark! team. You'll learn two pieces of music and the choreography that goes with them, have a go on the Spark! drums, and we'll get to know you. Wear something comfortable you can move in, bring water and some food, and come ready to get stuck in. People often tell us afterwards that, whatever the outcome, it was a brilliant day.
Do I need to keep the audition day free before I know if I'm invited?
Yes. Our audition day is in North Shields on Thursday 2nd July 2026, 9am to 4.30pm, and you need to be free that day to be considered. We know it's not easy to keep a full weekday clear at short notice, which is why we assess applications as they come in. Apply early and, if yours is a clear yes, we may be able to tell you before the deadline. Most people will still hear from us after applications close, once we've seen the full field, so not hearing early doesn't mean you're out.
Do I need to prepare anything for the audition?
No. If you're invited, we'll teach you everything you need on the day. The only thing to prepare before applying is your stepping and clapping video.
After you apply
What happens if I'm offered a place?
You'll join our initial rehearsal process, usually 12 to 15 paid rehearsal days between late July and mid-September. You'll start with the core material and build from there. The more parts you learn and the more available you are, the more shows you're likely to be offered.
When will I hear back after the audition?
Usually the same day. If we need a little longer, we'll tell you when to expect a decision.
Can I apply if I've applied before?
Yes. If you applied before and still think Spark! could be right for you, please do apply again. Skills, confidence and availability all change, and we're happy to take a fresh look.
What if I have a question before applying?
Email spark@worldbeatersmusic.com or message us on Instagram or Facebook. If you're unsure about something practical, just ask before spending time on the application.
Go on then.
Apply, and good luck!
Applications close at 5pm on Monday 29th June 2026.
